Celebrate the 70th Anniversay of Battle of Britian with Christopher Ward
The RAF have commissioned luxury watchmaker Christopher Ward to create a watch to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Battle of Britain.
The watch reflects the qualities that helped ‘The Few’ win what was arguably the most important military battle of the 20th Century. Agility, adaptability, reliability and accuracy were all key and it was also important that the watch could be proudly worn by both past and present members of the service as well as the general public.
The design of the automatic watch is based on the Air Ministry’s military issue pilots’ watch of the time (reference number 6B/159) and displays The King’s Crown and laurel wreathed RAF Crest of the period. Even the numerals are similar to those on 1940s pilots’ watches. Other features that were developed in conjunction with the RAF include hour and minute hands formed in the shape of the propeller blades of the Spitfire – the aircraft which was critical to Britain’s victory in 1940. The watch is powered by the 25-jewel ETA 2824-2 movement.
Production of the watch will be limited to 1940 pieces worldwide making it highly collectible. It is now available for pre-order ahead of the June launch. Even the owner’s handbook is based on the original 1940s logbooks the pilots used.
Christopher Ward is donating 5% of the retail value of every watch sold to the RAF Benevolent Fund and every watch will come in a limited edition box.
